Protect Your Work: The Quickest Way to Watermark Photos on Your Phone
Social media is essential for sharing our work, but it comes with a downside: once you post a photo, you lose control over where it goes.

Social media is essential for sharing our work, but it comes with a downside: once you post a photo, you lose control over where it goes. Whether you’re sharing a quick snapshot or a carefully composed landscape, adding a watermark is one of the simplest ways to claim ownership of your image.
The good news is you don’t need expensive software or a complicated workflow to do it. You likely already have the tools right in your pocket!
Here is how you can watermark your photos using the native editing tools on your iPhone and Android devices.
Why Watermark?

Before we get to the "how," let's touch on the "why." A simple text watermark, like your website URL or social handle, acts as a digital signature. It discourages casual theft and ensures that if your photo is shared without credit, viewers still know where to find you.
As you can see in the example above, a subtle text overlay (like @richphoto.io) in the corner is unobtrusive but effective.
Method 1: iPhone (Apple Photos)
If you are shooting on an iPhone, the built-in Photos app has a robust "Markup" feature that works perfectly for this.
1. Open the Photo: Go to your Photos app and select the image you want to share.
2. Enter Edit Mode: Tap Edit in the top right corner (or bottom, depending on your iOS version).
3. Access Markup: Tap the Pencil icon (Markup) usually found in the top right.
4. Add Text: Tap the Plus (+) icon in the bottom toolbar and select Add Text.
5. Customize:
• Double-tap the text box to type your handle (e.g., @richphoto.io).
• Tap the text again to change the color or font.
• Drag the text to a corner of the image.
6. Save: Tap Done in the top right to save your changes.
Pro Tip: Lower the opacity of the text color slightly if you want the watermark to blend in more naturally with the image, making it less distracting while still visible.
Method 2: Android (Google Photos)
For those using a Pixel or other Android devices, Google Photos offers a very similar workflow.
1. Open the Photo: Launch the Google Photos app and select your image.
2. Edit: Tap the Edit button (the sliders icon) at the bottom.
3. Find Markup: Scroll across the bottom tools until you find Markup.
4. Add Text: Select the Text tool.
5. Type and Style:
• Type your watermark text.
• You can choose different colors and fonts directly from the menu.
6. Position: Drag the text to your desired location. You can pinch to resize or rotate it.
7. Save Copy: Tap Save Copy so you keep your original clean version alongside the watermarked one.
Final Thoughts
Consistency is key. By using the native tools on your phone, you remove the friction of exporting to a third-party app, making it easier to protect every image you share. It takes less than thirty seconds, but it ensures your name travels as far as your photos do.
